In 2016, the Big Data consultancy analyzed (at the request of PayPal) the 10,5 million Brazilian websites and concluded that 3,54% of them are dedicated to e-commerce.
In other words, this means that there are more than 371 thousand e-commerce sites in Brazil, of which 56,38% are from São Paulo, 7,19% are from Rio de Janeiro and 6,97% are from Minas Gerais, the three states that most concentrate online business in the country.
And according to the same study:
– 76% of virtual stores have an average price of BRL 100,00
– 8,67% of virtual stores have an average price of BRL 100,00 to BRL 500,00
– 3,33% of virtual stores have an average price of BRL 500,00 to BRL 1.000,00
– 12% of virtual stores have an average price of more than BRL 1.000,00
The "average price" figures match those of the 3rd National Online Retail Survey published by Sebrae in partnership with the E-commerce Brasil group in June 2016, which shows that 90% of e-commerce businesses in the country are small companies.
According to the Sebrae numbers about Brazilian virtual stores:
– 45% of them use a rented e-commerce platform (such as Vtex)
– 32% use their own e-commerce platform
– 14% use free e-commerce platform
– 13% sell via app
However, despite there being more than 371 online stores in the country, they represent only 2% of the retail market share, which is almost entirely (96%) made up of physical stores, according to the Annual Retail Trade Survey.
