Topic clusters or, in Portuguese, topic groups, is a term that names an SEO strategy that revolves around sets of content linked to a central page called a pillar page. Ideal to use on your e-commerce blog, this strategy promises to deliver higher quality content, thus generating more visibility in the SERPs of search engines such as Google.

HOW TO APPLY THE TOPIC CLUSTERS STRATEGY IN YOUR E-COMMERCE BLOG?

The first step in applying the topic clusters strategy to your blog is to group keywords that have a common denominator. You can do this grouping using tools like Keyword Planner , for example, which allows you to check how much each word is searched over a period such as a month on Google.

Using the term “drone” as a common denominator, which has up to 1 million searches per month, according to Keyword Planner, I will select related keywords and create a grouping, that is, a cluster. Check out:

Professional drone (100 searches), camera drone (100 searches), cheap drone (10 searches), small drone (10 searches), semi-professional drone (1 searches) and intermediate drone (1 searches).

You can continue this list until you run out of keywords if you wish. In any case, ideally, your list should contain low, medium and high search volume keywords. Thus, your topic clustering strategy will allow you to offer content for a wide range of consumer questions.

Creating the pillar page

Once the keywords are selected, create a pillar page, which is nothing more than an article where you address the main term, which in our example is “drone”. Tell everything you can about this subject in this article. Also remember to create topics within this pillar page to cover common denominator terms like “professional drone”, “camera drone”, “cheap drone”, etc. Each of these terms can be a subhead within your post. This is one of the most important steps of the topic clusters strategy.

Producing the support articles

Right after creating the pillar page, start developing articles that cover common denominator terms separately. They will serve to send links to the pillar page and thus convey link juice and support it. Then, create an article about “intermediate drone”, another about “semi professional drone”, and so on. When you complete this part, your topic clusters strategy will be almost ready.

Establishing an internal linking system

Your topic cluster strategy should proceed with establishing internal links between the pillar page and the topic pages. That is, links should go from the "cheap drone," "professional drone," etc. pages to the main "drone" page, and vice versa. Creating internal links is the icing on the cake.

ADVANTAGES OF THE TOPIC CLUSTERS STRATEGY FOR YOUR BLOG'S SEO

The topic clusters strategy generates rich content, which is a priority for the algorithm of search engines like Google. But in addition to providing more complete content, it also generates more organized and SEO-optimized content. The internal linking system distributes link juice and increases the power of the blog as a whole. So, if you have or intend to have an e-commerce blog, be sure to use the topic clusters strategy.
