The term “Brazilian e-commerce profile” refers to the characteristics of national e-commerce in a given period. It encompasses a set of metrics such as the number of active online stores, the price of products and the geographic concentration of companies in the sector, for example.
Recently, PayPal, in partnership with BigData Corp, launched the survey “Brazilian e-commerce profile” where it points out the current conditions of multiple metrics over the years from 2014 to 2021. Follow some of the main results of this study below!
RESEARCH: BRAZILIAN E-COMMERCE PROFILE
According to the survey “Brazilian e-commerce profile” by PayPal and BigData Corp, Brazil had 11 million active websites in 2017. Since then, the number of websites has only grown, reaching 17 million in 2021.
Of this amount, however, only 600 sites were e-commerce sites in 2017. But in the following five years, the number of e-commerce sites more than doubled in the country, reaching more than 1,5 million in 2021. Today, commerce sites represent 9,4% of national sites.
One of the most interesting data from the study is that e-commerce has grown more than the economy in recent years. Brazilian GDP was negative in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2020 and 2021; and grew by only 1,9% and 1,6% respectively in 2018 and 2019. E-commerce, in turn, maintained a growth rate above double digits in 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021, with a peak of 40,7% in 2020.
Characteristics of Brazilian e-commerce in the last 6 years
In 2021, more than 83% of online businesses were small, according to the survey “Brazilian e-commerce profile”. Meanwhile, 9,92% were medium-sized and only 6,62% were large.
Of all e-commerce sites in 2021, the vast majority, 79,44%, sold 1-10 products and were therefore niche sites. Another 9,94% sold from 11 to 100 products, while 10,62% sold more than 101 products.
In 2016, according to the study “Brazilian e-commerce profile”, the average price of all products was higher than R$1 thousand for 12% of the sites. In 2018, that number dropped to 6,81%. In 2021, it rose to 12,15%, thus reaching the highest level in the last 6 years.
The study also points to the geographic concentration of e-commerce companies. In 2015, 54,87% of them were located in São Paulo, reducing to 51,8% in 2021. In the period, one of the states that most concentrated e-commerce headquarters was Minas Gerais, from 7% in 2015 to 7,24% in 2021.
Other features
According to the study “Brazilian e-commerce profile”, 60,37% of websites use virtual wallets; more than 92% have an SSL certificate; and over 83% are responsive. In addition, 69,65% are present on social networks. The most used social network in this context is Facebook (53,96%), followed by Youtube (45,82%) and Twitter (31,10%).
However, only 52,13% use analytics software to track e-commerce metrics. Systems such as Google Analytics are important because they allow us to understand the current state of a website and thus create strategies for performance improvements.
