E-commerce in Brazil became 3,07% more expensive in the first month of this year compared to December 2014. This is the largest monthly increase ever measured by Fipe/Buscapé.

Launched in January 2011 by the Foundation Institute of Economic Research (Fipe) in partnership with Buscapé, one of the largest websites for comparing services, products, and prices in Latin America, the Fipe/Buscapé Index aims to measure and publish monthly statistics about e-commerce in Brazil.

Basically, this index monitors 10 categories (home appliances, electronics , computers, telephony, photography, cosmetics and perfumes , sports and leisure, home and decoration, toys and games, fashion and accessories), each with divisions that lead to more than 150 subcategories and approximately 11 million products.

Since its creation, 48 months ago, Fipe/Buscapé has registered a variation between the months of December and January, which already showed a trend towards inflation at the beginning of 2015. Note:

• December 2011 to January 2012: – 1,98%
• December 2012 to January 2013: + 1,07%
• December 2013 to January 2014: + 1,10%
• December 2014 to January 2015: + 2,88%

The index also provides more detailed information that e-commerce and digital marketing agencies can use to adjust their product promotion strategies for their clients. This information includes price increases and decreases across the 10 product categories surveyed.

• Toys and games: + 5,88%
• Household appliances: + 5,66%
• Sports and leisure: + 4,37%
• Telephony: + 4,18%
• Information Technology: + 4,16%
• Home and decoration: + 3,86%
• Photography: + 3,36%
• Cosmetics and perfumery: + 2,04%
• Fashion and accessories: – 0,97%
• Electronics: – 0,88%

One of the parameters that lead products to fall in prices, as is the case of the electronics, fashion and accessories categories (listed above) is the high competition in the sector. The inverse, in turn, is also valid. That is, if prices are higher, it may be because competition is low.

So (based on the Fipe/Buscapé Index), how about stirring things up by lowering prices in a specific category with low competition to increase sales? Data like this is therefore a great help for a devastating digital marketing counter-attack against the competition. Keep your eyes open! Stay sharp!
