How generations behave in e-commerce

Do you know how generations behave in e-commerce? Well, today I will present some very interesting information about the five generations of people living in the world today. I hope that you, the reader, know how to use them to improve your digital business.

I recommend that you somehow incorporate the data (that you deem relevant) from this post into the Buyer Persona of your target audience, as this will allow you to better understand the people you are trying to sell your products to.

Very good! Now enough chit-chat and let's get down to business. Next, I'll introduce the generations, the years of birth, the ages and I'll show you some of their tastes. Check it out:

Boomer generation

People born between 1920 and 1945

This audience comprises what we currently (in 2016) call “senior citizens”. These are people aged between 71 and 96. As such, many of them use the web to buy medicines and products aimed at improving their quality of life.

As they lived between the two biggest wars of which we have news, the individuals of this generation are very disciplined and respectful of hierarchies.

Among e-commerce strategies targeting senior citizens, focus on the security and credibility of your online store, as these individuals will not buy anything without first feeling confident that you deserve their trust.

Baby Boomer Generation

People born between 1946 and 1960

The Baby Boomers are the children of the Boomers. They are people who are between 56 and 70 years old and who, instead of dedicating themselves to war (as their parents did), preferred to dedicate themselves to work.

In addition to workaholism, the so-called Baby Boomers are the types of people who like steady jobs, where they can work for decades without being bothered by relocations or layoffs.

Since relationship ties are strong in this generation, you are more likely to be able to market your e-products if you create a “referral” method, that is, if you get a customer to recommend your online store to their friends.

Generation X

People born between 1961 and 1980

Generation X comprises people who are now between 36 and 55 years old and who, in turn, are the children of the Baby Boomer generation and grandchildren of the Boomer generation. They were born at a time when hierarchy began to lose its value.

With the end of the great world wars, the crises of this new generation that came into the world around 1961 are marked by political conflicts, protests and the fall of many dictatorships.

In the economic and marketing field, Generation X grew up with the influence of TV and its advertisements. They also learned that choosing the best quality products makes all the difference.

Y generation

People born between 1981 and 2000

The individuals who make up Generation Y are currently between 16 and 35 years old. They were born, grew up and developed during the same period in which the internet began its evolution and e-commerce emerged. For those who are trying to understand how generations behave in e-commerce, Generation Y is one of the key generations.

Having developed in a context of constant social and technological change, people of this generation learned from an early age that nothing is or can be as stable as their parents, grandparents and great-grandparents want.

Because of the easy communication conditions in which they grew up, Generation Y individuals tend to talk to each other a lot about the quality and performance of products and online stores before making purchases.

Generationãthe Z

People born after 2001

People who are part of Generation Z are currently between 1 and 15 years old. This is the generation that, in addition to being born immersed in the internet, develops alongside mobile technologies. Hence the importance of mobile commerce.

Individuals of this generation are extremely skilled with both the large screens of desktops, notebooks and netbooks and the small screens of smartphones, tablets and cell phones.

Great-grandchildren of the Boomers, great-granddaughters of the Baby Boomers, granddaughters of Generation X and daughters of Generation Y, the people who make up Generation Z are most easily won over by audiovisual content.

Now that you know how generations behave in e-commerce, try adapting your e-commerce to them. I hope that, in some way, I have managed to help you better understand your target audience and optimize your online store. May this help your e-commerce sell more and better!
