The artist Banksy recently launched an e-commerce website. The products sold on it are contemporary works of art (which incorporate icons of mass culture, styles and techniques from different eras).

The online store is being called Gross Domestic Product.

For those who are not in the know, Banksy is the codename of an anonymous but famous British graffiti artist, painter and activist.

Some people think he is Robin Gunningham and others think he is Robert Del Naja, among other candidates. However, none of them confirm it.

Be that as it may, the artist has captivated the public not only with the mystery surrounding his true identity, but also through his art loaded with social content and polemics.

To give you an idea of his power, the painting “Devolved Parliament”, in which he painted chimpanzees in place of deputies in the British Parliament, was auctioned for R$49,3 million in early October.

However, why would an artist like him be interested in creating a virtual store and what does that have to do with registering an “e-commerce brand”? That's what you'll find out at the end of this article. But first, find out what Banksy's online store looks like.

The artist Banksy's online store mainly has these characteristics:

  • Contemporary art items;
  • Official limited-edition artist products;
  • Buyer curation (only select people can buy);
  • Consumers must answer the question “Why does art matter?” using up to 50 words;
  • A stand-up comedian will judge the responses and point out who has the right to buy;
  • Each customer is only allowed to buy one product;
  • Available products are priced from £10 to £850.

In addition, Banksy maintains a showroom in London, where consumers can physically view products from the online store before making an online purchase.

WHY BANKSY DECIDED TO CREATE A VIRTUAL STORE AND WHAT DOES IT HAVE TO DO WITH “BRAND”?

According to Portugal's Observador portal, the opening of a store with the name Banksy was advised by the artist's lawyer. For the legal professional, the procedure makes it difficult for third parties to appropriate the Banky brand.

In this context, it is worth remembering, protecting the brand is fundamental in all types of business, including e-commerce. In Brazil, the ideal is to register it at the National Institute of Industrial Property.

A registered trademark provides protection against copying, plagiarism, misappropriation, inappropriate use of symbols, etc., and also prevents you from having to change the name if it has been registered by a third party.

So, if you are thinking of having an online store or if you already have one, register it as soon as possible. If necessary, do as Banky did, that is, resort to the services of a specialized lawyer, who can advise you on the measures you should take.
