In e-commerce, the English term “user first”, which means “user first”, refers to an approach in which the objective is to prioritize the desires of the consumer, who is the user of the online store. In other words, in this approach it is not the business owner who dictates the rules, but the consumer. User experience is a major factor in this context.

HOW TO IMPLEMENT A USER FIRST STRATEGY IN YOUR E-COMMERCE?

The first step to implement a user first strategy in your e-commerce is to know your audience. You can start this knowledge process through well-known resources such as the “target audience” and “personas”.

Right after gaining prior knowledge of your audience, you should launch an e-commerce store, preferably using a headless platform like VTEX. This type of platform will allow you to modify, enhance, and evolve your online store much more easily, which is a very important factor within a user-first approach. If you already have an online store, but it's not anchored on a headless platform, then I recommend migrating to one.

Measure, analyze and optimize

Once the online store is up and running, move on to the next phase of the user-first approach, which is measuring and analyzing user behavior. To do this, use tools such as Hotjar , Google Optimize, and Microsoft Clarity, among others, which have features like heatmaps and A/B testing that allow you to collect user access data and identify behaviors.

Ultimately, data is the foundation of the user-first approach. Based on data that reveals user preferences, modify your store's layout and design . Implement, remove , or modify elements such as links , buttons, images, backgrounds, and menus, for example. Integrate chat and payment apps , among others, if necessary.

Beyond the design of the online store, the user-first approach should extend to marketing. That is, outreach strategies such as paid traffic , organic traffic, and inbound marketing, for example, can and should also have a user-first approach. In any case, the more user-centric your store is, the better.
