Most large Brazilian e-commerce websites invest up to R$ 3.500,00 (three thousand and five hundred reais) per month in e-commerce advertising, according to a study by the consulting firm SEMrush published by E-commerce Brasil.
In fact, the aforementioned study covers data from 100 of the largest Brazilian e-commerce sites throughout 2018. These sites, in turn, sell products in the following categories:
• Food
• House and garden
• Children
• Sports and Recreation
• Electronics
• Furniture and decoration
• Cheers
• Clothing
• Travels

How much do companies spend on e-commerce advertising?
When it comes to advertising for e-commerce, the SEMrush study points out that, in fact, in 2018:
• 64,5% of the companies analyzed invested up to BRL 3.500,00 monthly
• 19,77% invested more than BRL 15.000,00 (fifteen thousand reais)
• 15% invested between BRL 3.500,00 and BRL 15.000,00
However, despite the large national e-commerces investing in advertising, the SEMrush survey shows that only 1,98% of this advertising generates traffic to shopping sites.
Advertising for e-commerce and traffic on large sites
According to the aforementioned study, in 2018, the traffic of major e-commerce players was:
• 1,98% generated from advertisements;
• 7,3% generated from organic content from search engines such as Google;
• 2% generated via backlinks (third-party links pointed to the e-commerce site);
• 0,5% generated by social networks;
• 88% generated directly (consumer types website address).
As can be seen, consumers already know the big players well and, therefore, get straight to the point. They prefer to search directly within the e-commerce site than on a search engine.
Do small and medium-sized online stores need advertising for e-commerce?
If large e-commerce sites receive many direct visits, the same cannot be said of small and medium-sized virtual stores. These, yes, need a lot of e-commerce advertising.
It is important to mention, in Brazil, on average for every 100 unique visitors to an e-commerce site, only 1 makes a purchase. That way, if any small or medium-sized online store wants to sell, then the way is to advertise. And advertise a lot.
In this context, the main forms of e-commerce advertising today are:
• Sponsored ads for e-commerce
• Price comparison sites for e-commerce
Furthermore, if you can rely on a Digital Marketing Management service for e-commerce , even better. A Digital Marketing agency has the potential to generate better results.
Finally, I'd like to say that advertising just once isn't enough. You need to advertise consistently, even during economic crises. Finally, access and read the article " Why an e-commerce business should advertise during times of crisis " and find out for yourself.
