Online scam monitoring and prevention company, Konduto, has just released a report on e-commerce fraud. The document points out that, despite the sector's growth, there was a 17% drop in fraudulent activities in 2020 compared to 2019. Learn more below!
REPORT ON FRAUD IN E-COMMERCE

The document is based on an analysis of 244 million orders placed in more than 27 online stores in Brazil and Latin America in the last year. These requests, in turn, represent BRL 35 billion, of which BRL 1,3 billion were attempted frauds.
According to the study, the rate of attempted fraud in 2020 was 2,07%. This percentage is therefore lower than the 2,52% of 2019. The drop in the number of scams occurred during a period in which national e-commerce grew by 80% ( ABComm ).
The Konduto e-commerce fraud report also exposes other numbers such as:
- Times when online scams occur the most;
- Days of the week when there is more fraudulent activity;
- Average Ticket from fraudsters compared to Average Ticket from legitimate customers;
- Frequency of fraud in relation to computer and mobile operating systems.

MAIN TYPES OF ONLINE FRAUD
Today, the main types of online fraud are:
- Identity: embezzler uses victim's identity and credit card to buy products in an online store.
- Triangulation: Criminals use stolen cards to make purchases and then resell the products to legitimate customers.
- Phishing: Capturing sensitive data such as card numbers and passwords through fake e-commerce sites.
- cracking: Use of computing to obtain bank passwords or e-commerce user passwords for the purpose of purchasing and modifying goods delivery addresses.
- Family: criminal makes online purchases with his father's, mother's, grandparents', brothers' or friends' credit card without their knowledge.
